This tutorial will show you how to move all of the WooCommerce products in a category into another existing category. If you want to change the category of a selected group of products, please see the article How to Bulk Edit WooCommerce Products in WordPress.
Move Woocommerce Products from One Category to Another
Sometimes it is necessary to bulk move WooCommerce products from one category to another. If this situation ever arises, either due to error or poor planning, the Term Management Tools plugin is an easy solution.
NOTE: The Bulk Remove Posts From Category plugin will install a “Remove from category” checkbox to the Bulk Edit action on the Products page. The plugin extends the Bulk Editor to allow removing categories from posts, including products. Take a look at this plugin as an alternative to this tutorial.
Step 1
Download and install the Term Management Tools plugin. Once activated, the plugin will add new options to the Bulk Actions dropdown on the Product Categories page:
- Merge – combine two or more terms into one
- Set parent – set the parent for one or more terms (for hierarchical taxonomies)
- Change taxonomy – convert terms from one taxonomy to another
Step 2
Go to the WooCommerce Product Categories admin page:
Products > Categories
Step 3
Click the two category checkboxes to be merged together (or multiple categories you want to merge into one category).
Once the categories have been checked, click on “Merge” in the Bulk Actions drop-down menu.
An input field will show that will allow you to type the name of the category you are merging into. Use the name of one of the existing categories that you have checked. Finally, click the “Apply” button to move the WooCommerce products to the category selected.
NOTE: Only the specified category will be kept. The other checked categories will be removed.
